Q&A with Lana Haj Hussein


Why did you choose to study this degree?
My love for technology, programming, and computers in general, drove me to choose the field of computer engineering. I have always dreamt of advancing technologies that change and improve the quality of our lives.

What is one problem in the Arab world you would like to fix and why?
The high rate of unemployment. Many students complete their higher education, but are unable to secure jobs. This problem can lead to poverty and the migration of highly educated individuals to other countries or regions due to the lack of opportunities here.

What would you change about the education system in the region?
I would promote hands-on learning, where students acquire knowledge through discovery and experience and unleash their creativity and innovation.

Who would be your ideal mentor and why?
My ideal mentor would be my sister. She has always supported me and given me valuable advice based on her experience. She also helps me believe in myself and my abilities. She guided me on several important occasions in my life, especially when choosing my major.

What are your three most important personal values? Why?
My three most important values are optimism, as it allows me to believe in myself and have a positive approach to my failures; commitment to my goals, so I never give up and keep chasing my dreams; and aiming high, so that I always try my best and dedicate all my capabilities to reach my goals.

A leader is someone who is not scared to be unrealistic in his or her ambitions and who is determined to reach his or her goal. I believe that the true meaning of leadership lies in being a positive influence as well as motivating and inspiring others.

As someone who has been selected, what advice would you give to students who are interested in applying?
Don’t underestimate your abilities.
